Under contract through 2007. Named the Twins' third base coach in 1998 and replaced Tom Kelly as manager on January 4, 2002. In 2004, Gardenhire became the first manager in Twins' history to lead the team to three straight division championships. Attended the University of Texas at Austin and in 1978 set a school record with 10 RBI in a game. In his senior year, he captained the team to a fourth-place showing in the College World Series. Drafted by the New York Mets in the sixth round of the 1979 draft, he hit .232 for the Mets from 1981-1985. In 1986, Gardenhire missed out on a World Series ring when the Mets traded him to the Minnesota Twins for Don Iasparro.
