MINNEAPOLIS -- After losing a three-run lead and falling 6-4 to the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the ALDS, the Minnesota Twins turn to veteran Carl Pavano in hopes of avoiding an 0-2 hole.

"This is almost a do or die type thing," manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters before the game. "You don't want to go into New York 0-2"

Pavano has a rich history with the Bronx Bombers, and he has pitched well in his previous two playoff starts against them as well -- 15 innings, three earned runs, 13 strikeouts and zero walks.

He will face left-hander Andy Pettitte, who will make his 41st-career postseason start (18-9, 3.90 ERA with 164 strikeouts, 71 walks and 29 home runs allowed in 249 innings).

"I mean, we were hoping we would be going for 2-0 with Frankie, if he dominated, which he threw the ball very well and just didn't finish it off," Gardenhire said. "But, you know, your back-up plan is always if you don't win Game 1 against Sabathia, we have a stabilizer -- a guy that's not going to get overwhelmed by it in a huge game today, like this is a huge game, and that's kind of why we stuck Carl in there because of that.

"He will handle himself."
