MINNEAPOLIS -- Jerry Kill and the Minnesota Gophers revealed their 2014 recruiting class on Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.
With Kill entering his fourth year with the Gophers, this marks his third complete recruiting class, and on first glance, by far his highest regarded.
Headlined by widely sought after four-star running back Jeff Jones, the Gophers moved up from where they were a year ago in the national ratings. Ranked last in the Big Ten in 2013 by Rivals.com and Scout.com, the Gophers' newest class jumped to No. 8 on Rivals' list and No. 9 by Scout in the now 14-team conference.
Minnesota's latest crew of prospects include 20 scholarship athletes and eight who have signed on under walk-on status.
Gophers' 2014 recruiting class
Signed National Letter of Intent
Jeff Jones -- RB, Minneapolis (Minn.), 6-foot, 198-pounds
Kill's take: "Bottom line, everybody wanted the kid. It's hard when you've got that many people coming at you when you're long, but we maintained the relationship. We maintained the relationship all this time. I think that's why he came."
Gaelin Elmore -- TE, Somerset (Wisc.), 6-foot-6, 246-pounds
Kill's take: "He's a tremendous athlete. He's 6-6, 240, he can run, he's a great basketball player, recruited by everyone. And he made a commitment right out here on that football field that he was going to the University of Minnesota. His coaches and so forth then just shut down recruiting."
Connor Mayes -- OL, Van Alstyne (Texas), 6-foot-4, 246-pounds
Kill's take: "Connor was recruited by everybody in the country. He's one of the top offensive centers in the country this year. He stayed committed. That's not always easy to do. The big fella can play. We're excited."
Melvin Holland Jr. -- WR, Ashburn (Va.), 6-foot-3, 190-pounds
Kill's take: "Melvin Holland is a great get ... He's got length and speed. That's how you win right now."
Jerry Gibson -- TE, Theodore (Ala.), 6-foot-3, 220-pounds
Kill's take: "He's a young man who's fast enough to play wide receiver. He can play tailback, and he's a very good tailback. He can play tight end. He can flex out like (tight end) Maxx (Williams). He's a very multi-purpose, very smart young man, and we are very fortunate."
Julien Kafo -- DE, Mont-Tremblant (Quebec, Canada), 6-foot-4, 245-pounds
Kill's take: "In the Canadian system those kids come out, because of the way they do high school, 19, 20-years old. He's mature, very mature. He's every bit of 6-4, 255."
