Friday was a pretty good day for the Sherels family.

The Vikings on Friday announced they've re-signed punt returner and cornerback Marcus Sherels.

He averaged a franchise-record 15.2 yards per punt return in 2013, good for second in the NFL. He also filled in at cornerback after injuries struck the Vikings' secondary.

Sherels played collegiately for the Gophers. His agent, Chris Murray, told earlier this week that he was "optimistic" about talks between the Vikings and his client.

Sherels originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Brother Mike officially promoted

The Gophers also announced Mike Sherels, Marcus' brother, will be Jerry Kill's new linebackers coach. first reported the promotion Monday.

He replaces Bill Miller, who left to join the Florida State coaching staff.
