Nate Condon and Hudson Fasching within four minutes of each other in the second period to boost the top-ranked Minnesota Gophers hockey team to a 4-1 victory over No. 5 St. Cloud State in the opening round of the inaugural North Star College Cup Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center.
Just over midway through the second period, St. Cloud State's Jonny Brodzinski erased the Gophers' early lead - a first period goal by Travis Boyd. But it didn't take long before Condon and Fasching helped the Gophers reclaim the lead, which ultimately held up.
The Huskies (12-5-4) outshot the Gophers 39-29, but goalie Adam Wilcox yielded only once. Minnesota added an empty net goal in the final minute.
The Gophers (18-2-3) are set to meet Minnesota Duluth Saturday night (7 p.m.) in the North Star College Cup final. Earlier on Friday, UMD scored a power play goal with 27 seconds left in overtime to take down Minnesota State Mankato to earn a spot in the final. St. Cloud State will play Minnesota State in the consolation game (4 p.m.).
