Add another honor to Jared Allen's remarkable season.
The Minnesota Vikings' star end will be honored as NFC Defensive Player of the Year at the Football 101 Awards, the team announced on Tuesday.
Allen led the NFL with 22 sacks -- one shy of the single-season record -- and already has been named to the Pro Bowl and The Associated Press' All-Pro first team.
The AP awards generally are recognized as "official" honors, since the NFL doesn't hand out its own awards. That organization will announce its NFL defensive player of the year later this month.
Other Football 101 Award winners, as selected by a national committee of 101 media members who cover the NFL, are: Terrell Suggs (AFC defensive player of the year), Aaron Rodgers (NFC offensive player of the year), Tom Brady (AFC offensive player of the year), Jim Harbaugh (NFC coach of the year) and Gary Kubiak (AFC coach of the year).
The entire group will be honored at the 42nd Annual NFL 101 Awards gala on March 3 in Kansas City.
