EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Consider the speculation over for now.
Brad Childress says T.J. Houshmandzadeh won't be a Minnesota Viking anytime soon.
One media report on Saturday said the Vikings had made a trade offer to Seattle (it didn't happen) and another said Houshmandzadeh had signed with the Vikings only hours after the Seahawks cut him (didn't happen either).
Asked on Sunday afternoon whether the Vikings are interested at all, Childress was unequivocal.
"Not right now," the Vikings' coach said. "I'd probably be more prone to seeing if we can find a younger guy or somebody's that been around in a West Coast offense."
The Vikings kept only four receivers in their 53-man roster reduction, releasing veteran receiver Javon Walker among 20 cuts on Saturday.
Childress indicated the Vikings may stick with four receivers for the time being, too, saying that "it's going to be hard to keep five wide receivers when we're looking at where we were at different positions."
Childress left the door open the Vikings might re-sign Walker "at a point in time" but didn't indicate when that might happen.
"I had a good discussion with him last night," Childress said. "He did a decent job for us. He's system-friendly, and obviously, he knows the quarterback a little bit."
Quarterback Brett Favre -- who had thrown public support behind his former Green Bay Packers teammate -- said "there's always a chance we bring (Walker) back sooner rather than later (and he's well aware of that."
Favre acknowledged he was "disappointed" by the decision but understood the Vikings had needs at other positions.
"Can he run like he used to? No," Favre said of Walker, 31. "But he's a good football player, he's a good guy, he's a hard worker. ... Maybe it'll work out that he can come back."
