If Trevor Mbakwe returns to the Gophers men's basketball team, there will be a scholarship open for him.
Sophomore guard Chip Armelin has been granted his release from his scholarship, the "U" announced on Monday.
"Chip has been a valuable part of our program for the past two seasons," coach Tubby Smith said in a statement released by the university.
"He has done everything we have asked of him and we are grateful for his contributions to this program on and off of the court. We are sad that he has elected to leave but certainly want to wish him the very best."
Armelin appeared in all 38 games this past season, posting career highs in points (5.2 points per game), rebounds (2.1) and minutes (13.7). He'll remain on campus to finish the semester, the "U" said.
Mbakwe, who has been granted a sixth year of eligibility, hinted on Sunday night he'll be back next season but said nothing is official.
