Following four straight Big 10 victories for the first time in 40 years, the 8-2 Gophers football team eyes perhaps its biggest game in a decade when the Wisconsin Badgers come to TCF Bank Stadium on Nov. 23.
If Wisconsin takes care of business at home against Indiana this weekend, they will also move to 8-2 and possibly a top-15 ranking. The Gophers are currently ranked 25th in the coaches poll and could move into the AP's top 25 if others fall out this week.
The Gophers and Badgers have the longest-running rivalry in Division-1 football, dating back to 1890, and both could very well be ranked after this weekend. This combination of historical and current relevance has some Gophers fans wondering if ESPN's College GameDay road show might consider setting up shop at the University of Minnesota on Nov. 23.
GameDay has invaded 58 different campuses, including nine Big 10 locations, since its first road show in 1993, but never the University of Minnesota.
We all knew it was probably a long shot, considering some of the other games on the Nov. 23 schedule, and GameDay host Chris Fowler confirmed the long odds on Twitter on Tuesday night.
Minnesota fans campaigning for 11/23 @CollegeGameDay: Root for Texas S'day. And TX Tech. And WIS. The November grid is interconnected!— Chris Fowler (@cbfowler) November 12, 2013
Fowler is referring to scenarios that could decrease the importance of some of the other premiere games on Nov. 23. As of right now, No. 5 Baylor is set to play No. 12 Oklahoma State on Nov. 23, which is clearly a higher-profile game than Minnesota-Wisconsin. But if Texas Tech can beat Baylor this weekend, or if No. 24 Texas can upset Oklahoma State, it might give the Gophers and Badgers a better chance at GameDay.
Other big games on Nov. 23 include No. 19 Arizona State at No. 13 UCLA and No. 11 Texas A&M at No. 21 LSU, although the latter is a CBS game.
