CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Antoine Winfield decided to give his stiff a neck a couple of more weeks to heal.

The Minnesota Vikings' veteran cornerback was inactive for the fourth consecutive week on Sunday at Carolina.

Winfield ramped up his workload this past week and told reporters on Thursday he hoped to play. But he didn't do anything in the sliver of practice open to reporters on Friday and apparently ruled himself out, since coaches had left the decision in his hands.

That thrust Asher Allen into the starting lineup alongside Cedric Griffin, with Marcus Sherels expected to handle nickel duties.

There were no surprises among the Vikings' other inactives: halfback Lorenzo Booker, linebacker Xavier Adibi, right guard Anthony Herrera, offensive lineman DeMarcus Love and end D'Aundre Reed.

Herrera was ruled out on Friday because of his knee injury and was replaced in the starting lineup by Joe Berger.

Booker missed practice on Thursday and Friday with concussion syptoms. As expected, receiver Percy Harvin (rib) was active and expected to take all of the kickoffs with Booker sidelined.

If Harvin can't finish, rookie Stephen Burton probably would handle kickoffs and get some work on offense, too.
