FIU transfer Malik Smith likely eligible to play immediately for 'U'

The University of Minnesota announced Monday that transfer point guard Malik Smith will likely be eligible to play immediately.

Smith's eligibility is based on his former school, Florida International University, being on the verge of a possible post-season ban due to slipping too far below the Academic Progress Rate line. An NCAA waiver is pending.

Smith averaged 14.1 points and 2.7 rebounds under Richard Pitino at FIU as a junior last season. Smith also set an FIU record with 96 three-pointers made.

"I was a pleasure to coach Malik last season at FIU and I am excited that he has decided to join the Golden Gopher program," said Pitino in a statement. "His knowledge of our program on and off the court will be invaluable as we start to integrate our system here at Minnesota."
