Former FIU recruit Daquein McNeil opts to commit to Pitino's Gophers

Richard Pitino has landed the first recruit of his tenure with the Gophers men's basketball team.

Guard Daquein McNeil, who had been committed to Pitino at Florida International, reversed his commitment Wednesday and opted to follow Pitino to Minnesota.

McNeil, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound native of Maryland, spent his last three years playing for Vermont Academy prep school. Rated as three-star prospect by Rivals.com, McNeil committed to the Florida International in October. But when the NCAA basketball signing period open Wednesday he decided to join the coaching staff that had recruited him.

McNeil is currently the lone recruit in the Gophers' 2013 class. The Gophers' two recruits brought in under former coach Tubby Smith, Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster, both decommitted in the last two weeks.
