EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Ending nearly a week of speculation, Matt Cassel will start at quarterback Sunday, Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said Friday at Winter Park.

Cassel performed adequately in replacement of Christin Ponder on Sept. 29, as the Vikings beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in London. Ponder is returning from a rib injury and has been cleared to play, but it appears the Vikings have moved on.

The Vikings on Monday signed quarterback Josh Freeman after reportedly agreeing to terms with the free agent Sunday night. Freeman will not play Sunday, but is working toward learning the Vikings offense so he can get on the field.

Ponder will be the backup at home Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

Frazier declined to name a long-term starter Friday, but said: "We need to sit back Monday after the game, see where we are."
