During his weekly appearance on 1500 ESPN Friday, Ron Gardenhire spoke briefly about the status of first baseman Justin Morneau, who has been sidelined since July 7 with concussion.

When asked to provide an update, Gardenhire said Morneau is taking some swings and "definitely doing a lot better," but he added, "I don't see how it can possibly happen for him," regarding a September or October return.

"I hope I'm wrong... I'm hoping all of the sudden he joins us somewhere."

Morneau, who celebrated the birth of his first child this week, previously said he was encouraged and optimistic on September 8 about a possible return.

The team has not yet ruled Morneau out for a return, most likely because teams can alter playoff rosters before each round.

Since the All-Star break, the Twins are 46-18 without Morneau, and they've maintained one of the best offensive units in baseball.
