University of Minnesota junior forward Sam Warning notched a natural hat trick in Saturday night's 4-2 win over Ohio State to complete the weekend sweep.
The top-ranked Gophers (17-2-3, 7-0-1 Big Ten) beat the Buckeyes on Friday night in the Hockey City Classic by the score of 1-0 at the outdoor TCF Bank Stadium. The Gophers returned inside Mariucci Arena on Saturday night and fell into a 2-0 hole in the first period.
Warning responded with the first of three goals off a feed from sophomore defenseman Mike Reilly to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the first period. Warning took less than half of the second period to add two more goals and give the Gophers their first and only lead of the game. Junior forward Seth Ambroz added the final goal with 12:47 left.
Warning's natural hat trick is the Gophers' first consecutive three-goal performance since Oct. 9, 2010.
The Gophers have recorded back-to-back Big Ten sweeps since a Jan. 3 shootout loss to Colgate in the Mariucci Classic. They faceoff against St. Cloud State in the North Star College Cup on Jan. 24 at the Xcel Energy Center.
