Gophers football linebacker Lamonte Edwards has been dismissed from the team, a University of Minnesota team spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

According to a report from the Star Tribune, Edwards was arrested for stealing an iPhone in the Gophers' weight room at the Bierman Athletic building and later admitted to police that he committed the crime.

Edwards's dismissal is a blow to the Gophers' already thin linebacker corps. Edwards, who was entering his junior season, was moved from running back to linebacker in 2011 and recorded eight tackles at the position last season.

Edwards was being targeted by the Gophers coaching staff as a key part of the team's linebacker rotation in the fall.

The Gophers had four linebackers graduate at the end of last season, including two primary starters. Soon-to-be redshirt senior Aaron Hill has become the lead piece in the recent overhaul the Gophers are trying to implement at the position this season.
