The University of Minnesota Gophers men's hockey team rebounded from a shootout upset to Colgate on Friday night with a consolation win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday in their own Mariucci Classic at Mariucci Arena.
Off a three-goal second period, the Gophers put up 44 shots on the night and were led by junior Travis Boyd, who tallied three points.
The top-ranked Gophers won 6-2 and claimed third place in the Classic.
Boyd split the difference just 21 seconds after a one-all first period, which began a 5-1 rout of the Engineers in the final two periods. The Engineers managed just 20 shots on goal.
The Gophers' loss to Colgate on Friday night looked a little better after the Raiders upset No. 2 Ferris State on Saturday to claim the Classic title.
The Gophers (13-2-3) continue conference play on Jan. 12 at Penn State (4-10-1).
