Minnesota Gophers junior punter Peter Mortell was named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list on Wednesday.

Mortell was one of 25 punters to make the list. Fellow Big Ten punters Mike Sadler (Michigan State) and Cameron Johnston (Ohio State) also made the cut.

Mortell ranked third in the Big Ten last season with a punt average of 43.3 yards. Fifteen of his 62 punts went for 50 yards or more, with 21 of them landing inside the 20-yard line. After serving as a special teams backup as a redshirt freshman, he appeared in all 13 games for the Gophers in 2013. Mortell went on to be named to the All-Big Ten honorable mention list.
