Minnesota Gophers men's basketball recruit Alvin Ellis was released from his letter of intent on Wednesday, leaving him open to look at other options.
Ellis, a three-star prospect out of Chicago, tweeted Wednesday afternoon: "Good luck to the #Gopher team and all the fans in the future. Had to do what was best for me and my family!"
Ellis' decision was made as the Gophers continue their now nine-day search for a new head coach. Tubby Smith, who landed Ellis last September, was fired on March 25.
Without Ellis, the Gophers have only one recruit remaining in their 2013-14 class, forward Alex Foster.
Ellis could still end up with the Gophers if the incoming coach is able to lure him back, but in the meantime the 6-foot-5, 185-pound forward is able to reopen discussions with other teams.
Kansas State, Northwestern and Wichita State all made offers to Ellis before he ultimately chose Minnesota back in September.
