EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings injury woes will see them right to the end of this tumultuous 2013 season.

On Friday, the Vikings placed linebacker Audie Cole on injured reserve and upgraded cornerback Robert Steepeles from the practice squad to the active roster. The news came off the heels of coach Leslie Frazier's announcement that running back Adrian Peterson (groin/foot) is doubtful and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) is out for Sunday's season finale against the Detroit Lions.

"Unless something dramatically changes," Frazier said Peterson won't play as he's hampered by a mid-foot sprain he suffered in a Dec. 8 loss at Baltimore and a groin pull he's played through in the second half of the season.

Frazier cut off a reporter's inquiry and reiterated that Peterson sitting out is not in an effort to save him for the future.

"No. If [Peterson] could play, just like last week, he'd be out there," Frazier said.

Third-string running back Matt Asiata (ankle) is probable and will likely get his second career start. |

Defensive tackle Letroy Guion (quadriceps) is doubtful and both cornerbacks Xavier Rhodes (ankle) and Shaun Prater (ankle) are questionable. If Rhodes can play, he likely wouldn't start, per Frazier.

"We'd probably work [Rhodes] in there, see how he feels tomorrow," Frazier said. "Prater in the mix, along with Chris [Cook] and Marcus [Sherels], those would be the guys who could start."

Rhodes was held out of practice in back-to-back weeks following a sprained ankle in the Dec. 8 loss at Baltimore. He was on crutches for at least a week before returning to the practice field for the first time this week.

The rest of the ailing Vikings are probable for Sunday's Metrodome finale: cornerback Chris Cook (knee), defensive tackle Fred Evans (knee), running back Matt Asiata (ankle), safety Harrison Smith (groin/foot), linebacker Larry Dean (knee), fullback Jerome Felton (knee), guard Brandon Fusco (knee), cornerback Marcus Sherels (shoulder) and receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (chest).
