It's official: Joe Coleman granted release from scholarship at 'U'

If new Gophers men's basketball coach Richard Pitino wanted to change Joe Coleman's mind, he didn't succeed.

The "U" announced on Wednesday that Coleman has asked for and will be granted release from his scholarship.

"Joe Coleman has made the decision to leave the Golden Gopher basketball program. We wish him the very best in the future," Pitino said in a statement issued by the school. "We appreciate the contributions he has given the program the last two years."

Sources told 1500 ESPN's Darren "Doogie" Wolfson on Tuesday that Coleman, 19, had decided to transfer but would meet with Pitino on Wednesday morning.

The Minneapolis native, Hopkins High School alum and 2011 Minnesota Mr. Basketball played 72 games with the Gophers, averaging 7.2 points and 3.3 rebounds a game.
