The Minnesota Wild extended qualifying offers Tuesday to a group of restricted free agents that includes defenseman Jared Spurgeon.
Spurgeon is expected to be an important piece of the Wild's blueline next season.
Offers also were extended to defensemen Tyler Cuma and Kyle Medvec and right wingers Justin Fontaine and Carson McMillan.
The Wild chose not to make qualifying offers to restricted free agent forwards Joel Broda and Benn Ferriero.
Ferriero was acquired from the New York Rangers on Sunday, along with a 2014 sixth-round pick, in exchange for defenesman Justin Falk. Clearly, Ferriero never factored into the Wild's plans.
NHL free agency will open Friday morning but teams can begin talking with free agents tonight.
