The Twins said Sunday that Mauer is day-to-day. He said he originally felt discomfort in Sunday's batting practice.
"Maybe the second or third round, I felt something in my back and just tried to get loose," Mauer said. "I really started to feel it once I tried to crank it up and get ready for the game. ... The more I was trying to get it loose I was aggravating it worse."
He said he felt it most when he was "running or moving around."
"Probably [felt it] more in the field [than swinging]. I knew it wasn't good before the first pitch and it just kept getting worse and worse so I knew I had to get off the field."
It's a feeling Mauer said he hadn't had during his catching days, at least not that he could remember. He said he hopes to play Monday in Cleveland.
"They tell me the muscles that spasm, once I get that calmed down I should be able to be out there," Mauer said.
With Mauer out, Ron Gardenhire inserted Sam Fuld into the second spot of the batting order, which is puzzling considering Fuld's .312 career on-base percentage.
