Joe Mauer is banged up -- and out of the Minnesota Twins' lineup again on Thursday.

Manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters only that Mauer was "sore" and declined to elaborate, other than saying the All-Star catcher would have been in the lineup for the Twins' series opener at Tampa Bay if he felt better and will be re-evaluated on Friday.

Mauer also sat out Wednesday's loss to Kansas City, but it was believed that was simply a product of the schedule, with a day game following a night game.

The 27-year-old missed a large chunk of spring training while recovering from offseason knee surgery. Mauer is hitting a relatively pedestrian .235 (8-for-34) this season with one double and four RBIs, but this is the first time he has sat out for anything other than scheduled rest.

Drew Butera once again took Mauer's place behind the plate, and Michael Cuddyer was scheduled to move up to the No. 2 spot in the batting order.
