Joe Mauer will rejoin the Minnesota Twins for Tuesday's game against the Kansas City Royals.

The Twins announced after Sunday's loss at Seattle that they have optioned catcher Butera back to Triple-A Rochester. Mauer will be reinstated from the restricted list on Monday.

Butera, who was recalled on Wednesday to replace Mauer, appeared in two games going 0-for-3.

Mauer left the team last week so he could return to the Twin Cities for the birth of his twin daughters on Wendesday.

Meanwhile, righthanded pitcher Rich Harden, injured for much of his nine-year big league career, was granted his release by the Twins.

"He's had a lat, shoulder and a variety of things," assistant general manager Rob Antony said. "He just couldn't get healthy." Harden had been working out at the team's facility in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
