MINNEAPOLIS -- Kenny Onatolu's return will have to wait at least another five days.
The backup linebacker and core special teamer was among the Minnesota Vikings' seven scratches for Saturday's exhibition against the Dallas Cowboys, along with cornerback Asher Allen (toe), halfback Toby Gerhart (ankle/Achilles), linebackers Ross Homan (concussion) and Heath Farwell (hamstring), tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring) and defensive tackle Kevin Williams (foot).
Onatolu suffered a stress fracture in his left foot on Aug. 2 and missed the first two preseason games. He returned to practice on Monday, but he was limited all week and apparently didn't show enough progress for the Vikings to suit him up against the Cowboys.
Injuries have left the Vikings in a bind at linebacker. They only were expected to suit up six on Saturday, and that included David Herron, who re-signed with the team on Friday.
Starters were expected to play the first half in the Vikings' third preseason game, with a few such as weak-side linebacker Erin Henderson perhaps getting even more extended action.
The Cowboys scratched 11 players: kicker Kai Forbath, receiver Teddy Williams, kicker David Buehler, receiver Miles Austin, cornerback Mike Jenkins, cornerback Terence Newman, linebacker Bruce Carter, guard Montrae Holland, center Andre Gurode, guard Phil Costa and end Marcus Spears.
Kevin Kowalski was slated to start for Gurode, Bill Nagy for Costa, Kevin Ogletree for Austin and Alan Ball for Jenkins.
