MINNEAPOLIS -- Mike Sherels, a current defensive graduate assistant under Gophers coach Jerry Kill, will be promoted to linebackers coach in place of the outgoing Bill Miller, Sherels told 1500ESPN.com.

Sherels, who played linebacker for the Gophers from 2004-07, joined on with coach Jerry Kill when he took over the program in 2011. Sherels, the older brother of Vikings cornerback Marcus Sherels, was initially given the title "special assistant to the head coach" before being named a defensive graduate assistant in 2013.

News of Miller's departure broke last week when Kill confirmed Miller was leaving after three years on the staff to take a position with Florida State.

Sherels' promotion is the first major addition to Kill's staff in his four-year tenure.

The Gophers have not officially confirmed or announced the move.
