Max Gardiner is leaving the "U" men's hockey program.
The former Minnetonka High School captain played in 17 games last season as a freshman, recording one goal and two assists. But concerns about playing time led Gardiner to inform Gophers coach Don Lucia he'll play junior hockey next season.
"We had a good conversation and he was disappointed in the ice time he received last year and was concerned about playing time in the upcoming season," Lucia said in a statement posted on the team's Web site.
"Leaving assures him of the ice time he is looking for. I am disappointed he is leaving, but I understand his decision and wish him all the best."
