Rakeem Buckles' path to the University Minnesota just encountered a speed bump.

The NCAA denied his waiver to leave Florida International University to join the Gophers, according to a team source. The University of Minnesota will appeal the denied waiver on Buckles' behalf, and one source said the team feels good about that appeal's chances.

If he's cleared, Buckles is expected to be in the mix for big minutes at power forward, perhaps even earing a starting spot in Richard Pitino's lineup.

In the last two years, the 6-7, 215-pound forward has suffered two major knee injuries, a concussion and a broken index finger.

Buckles last played for Louisville in 2011-2012, appearing in 11 games. He averaged 4.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
