Veteran goaltender Niklas Backstrom underwent successful sports hernia surgery on Thursday, the Minnesota Wild announced.
Backstrom, who missed the playoff series at Chicago after being injured in warmups for Game 1, had the surgery in Philadelphia with Dr. William Meyers.
He is expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2013-14 season.
Backstrom can become a free agent this summer and saw his numbers decline at age 35. But general manager Chuck Fletcher has indicated the Wild are interested in re-signing him.
