Outshooting Illini not enough for Gophers women to come back on road

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Gophers women's basketball team suffered its seventh Big Ten Conference loss on Sunday, falling 76-66 to Illinois despite outshooting the Illini from the field.

Rachel Banham had 17 points, six assists and two steals to lead the Gophers (15-10, 4-7), who shot 47.1% from the field -- including 60.7% (17-of-27) in the second half -- to 46.2% for the Illini (14-9, 7-4).

The Gophers led 19-17 with about 5 minutes left in the first half on two Banham free throws, but the Illini answered with a 10-0 run and never trailed again. The "U" twice knotted the score, at 58 and 60, before the Illini pulled away.

Micaëlla Riché and Leah Cotton added 12 points apiece for the Gophers, who return to action at home against Northwestern on Sunday.
