UPDATE (3:00 p.m. Monday): The Gophers made it official today, naming VCU's Marlene Stollings the next head coach of the women's basketball team. The introductory press conference is scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The University of Minnesota is close to landing it's next women's basketball coach.
A background check is all that stands between Marlene Stollings and Gophers women's head coaching job, sources directly involved told 1500 ESPN contributor Darren Wolfson. That background check is in progress.
According to a source, the contract years and perks in the contract are similar to those of men's head coach, Richard Pitino, although the annual salary is lower.
Stollings was hired as the women's head coach at Virginia Commonwealth in June of 2012, roughly two months after the Gophers plucked Athletics Director Norwood Teague from the school.
David Benedict, who is now on Teague's staff at Minnesota, was the interim AD at VCU at the time Stollings was hired at VCU.
At the time, Benedict called Stollings "one of the most respected young coaches in the country."
The Rams went 33-29 in two seasons under her guidance.
