Purple Podcast, ep 6: Which starting positions remain unsettled?
Andrew Krammer joins the Purple Podcast from Los Angeles to talk about the unsettled starters that remain with two games to go in the preseason. Who is in the mix to start at safety next to Harrison Smith and how did Week 2 of the preseason impact that race? Is Marcus Sherels the third cornerback? Who could challenge him before the start of the regular season? What does Mike Zimmer think of Josh Robinson? Will he even make the team? Andrew also notes an interesting wrinkle the Vikings are using on the defensive line, which includes Anthony Barr getting a look at defensive end. Barr said the plan is for him to be ready to take snaps at linebacker and at defensive end by Week 1 of the regular season. And of course, it wouldn't be a Purple Podcast without mention of the quarterbacks. The safe bet right now is that Matt Cassel will start Week 1, while Teddy Bridgewater got a nice confidence boost in the second half of Game 2 of the preseason.

The Minnesota Vikings will be without five players as they begin exhibition No. 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs at 7 p.m. CT from Arrowhead Stadium.

Cornerback Jabari Price (unknown), linebacker Gerald Hodges (knee), defensive tackle Linval Joseph">Linval Joseph (calf), tight end Chase Ford (foot) and linebacker Brandon Watts (hamstring) will not suit up against the Chiefs. Both Price and Hodges were injured during last week's preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Vikings will have cornerback Josh Robinson, who has been on and off the field with a hamstring injury this offseason. Safety Robert Blanton (hamstring) will also see his first preseason action of the year after sitting out training camp.

Chris Crocker will start at safety alongside Harrison Smith, while Matt Asiata gets the nod at running back with Adrian Peterson continuing to sit out exhibition play. Fred Evans will continue to start for Joseph.

Hodges has averaged about 23 snaps per preseason game so far and his absence should open up a spot for someone like Michael Mauti, who has seen minimal action in the preseason.
