Adrian Peterson's young son has died, according to multiple reports. He was 2.

The boy was the victim of an alleged assault in Sioux Falls, S.D., and was reportedly in the hospital in critical condition with injuries to his head.

Peterson was absent from practice Thursday, when he took a personal day to address the situation.

He returned to Winter Park on Friday and addressed the media, but asked that his privacy be respected and requested that no one ask questions about the matter.

"I'm going to start off by saying I really appreciate all the support I've been receiving from the fans and Vikings organization," Peterson said. "This is a private matter, I ask y'all to please respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand."

Peterson nor police would confirm the identity of the child, but Nelson Peterson, Adrian's father, confirmed he was Adrian's son to multiple news outlets, including the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press.

Peterson said he will play in Sunday's game, as the Vikings host the Carolina Panthers.
