Former Gophers QB Philip Nelson will transfer to Rutgers

Philip Nelson made news two weeks ago when he decided to transfer out of the Gophers program.

Now, he may have his landing spot, Nelson confirmed to contributor Darren Wolfson.

Nelson likely will redshirt this season, per the NCAA transfer rules.

But since Rutgers is not part of the Big Ten Conference until July 1, the ordinary transfer rules won't apply. He would forfeit a season of eligibility to transfer a Big Ten team in typical circumstances, but he'll only need to sit out one for the Scarlet Knights. After his redshirt season, he'll have two remaining years of eligibility.

The Gophers will host Rutgers on Oct. 22, 2016, which could well be Nelson's return to TCF Bank Stadium.
