Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he wanted Matt Cassel back, if that's what Cassel wanted.
Apparently he does as Cassel will return to Minnesota, reported first by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.
Cassel, 32 in May, is reportedly to re-sign with Minnesota after opting out of the back end of a two-year deal he signed before the 2013 season. Cassel left $3.7 million on the table to threaten to test free agency, but re-signed a two-year, $10 million deal, per CBSSports' Jason La Canfora.
The timing of the report is right up against the opening of a three-day window where teams can negotiate with unrestricted free agents. That window opens on Saturday and teams can ink deals with those players when the new league year begins on Tuesday, March 11 at 3 p.m. CT.
Cassel appeared in nine games with the Vikings last season and led the team with 11 touchdown passes.
