Mikko Koivu will not skate in the Olympics, according to Mike Russo of the Star Tribune

The Wild's captain was expected to captain the Finnish team, if he was healthy enough to play. The Wild announced a 1 p.m. press conference for Friday, probably to make an announcement on Koivu's 2014 Olympic fate.

Koivu broke his ankle Jan. 6, and was hoping to return to action before the Olympic break. He did not skate in any games for the Wild since surgery repaired the broken ankle.

He was introduced in the Olympic send-off Thursday night at the Xcel Energy Center. As the public address announcer read off the names of Olympians, Koivu was near the Wild's bench in a suit as he acknowledged the crowd.

Team Finland already had several injuries to key players, and Koivu's absence will be a big blow to a team that some considered a dark horse to win gold when rosters originally were announced.
