Joel Maturi's decade-long run as University of Minnesota athletic director is about to end.

School president Dr. Eric Kaler confirmed in a media conference on Thursday morning that Maturi is retiring, saying it was a mutual decision not to renew Maturi's contract.

The decision came shortly after talks with men's basketball coach Tubby Smith about a contract extension were pushed off until after the season, according to a 5 Eyewitness News report.

Named athletic director on July 12, 2002, Maturi is expected to remain with the university working on special projects. The report also mentioned an email was sent to staff and students in which it was said Maturi, 66, will be retiring on June 30, when his contract expires.
