The Minnesota Vikings entered Sunday with three games left in their season, but that doesn't mean club executives haven't started looking for their next coach.

One of the first calls reportedly went to Penn State coach Bill O'Brien.

With the Vikings sitting at 3-9-1 and many expecting Leslie Frazier to be let go after the year, O'Brien was approached by the team, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

O'Brien, offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots before being hired by Penn State in 2012, had interviews with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns about their head coachings jobs after last season.

This time the Vikings and Houston Texans have checked in with O'Brien, according to La Canfora.

The report says that O'Brien felt obligated to remain at Penn State for a second season but that his relationship with school officials has become more strained.

The NFL Network, meanwhile, reported that Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will return next season.
