As the start of the NHL's free agency period nears, Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo met with free agent target Thomas Vanek on Sunday night, according a report by the Star Tribune's Michael Russo.
Per Russo's report:
"The objective for Sunday's meeting was for Yeo to talk to Vanek about his potential fit and role, the Wild's system and what would be expected from Vanek if he were to sign in Minnesota."
Minnesota has been a long-rumored landing spot for Vanek, who was a star on the Minnesota Gophers' 2003 NCAA championship team.
The 30-year-old winger is set to officially become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday at 11 a.m. after turning down long-term deals from the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders in the past year.
According to Russo, the Wild are likely to offer Vanek a short-term deal. Vanek is expected to have numerous suitors during free agency, several of which may be geared to offer him a longer, more lucrative contract.
Last October, Vanek was traded by the Sabres to the Islanders before eventually being dealt to Montreal in March. He has scored 20 goals or more in each of the past eight seasons.
The Wild have also reportedly been in contact with pending veteran free agent Jarome Iginla.
