With the addition of Ilya Bryzgalov">Ilya Bryzgalov, Niklas Backstrom was no longer needed.

He has been shut down for the season, according to the Star Tribune's Michael Russo.

Backstrom hadn't seen game action since Jan. 30 and hasn't started since Jan. 11. He's struggled with inconsistent play and most recently, dealt with an abdominal issue.

Rookie goalie Darcy Kuemper, who figures to remain the team's No. 1 option, has won five starts in a row.

The Wild signed Backstrom to a three-year, $10.25 million contract this offseason, and he's now been passed on the depth chart by three different goaltenders.
