The Minnesota Timberwolves are 6.5 games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

With eight games left, center Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will sit again on Friday night as the Timberwolves play the Miami Heat, per the Star Tribune's Jerry Zgoda.

Pekovic, 28, has missed eight of the last 11 games, including tonight, as he's dealt with soreness in his right ankle. The Timberwolves (37-37) have a record of 5-5 in those contests, with a tough matchup against the defending-champion Heat ahead.

Pekovic is the Timberwolves' third-leading scorer at 17.4 points per game, but he has missed 21 full games this season -- 28 percent of the team's schedule so far.

The Timberwolves will extend the longest-active NBA streak of seasons without a playoff appearance to 10 if they miss out this season.

The Timberwolves have gone since 2004 without making the playoffs.
