The Vikings declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Christian Ponder's contract, according to reports from ESPN and the Star Tribune.

Ponder will become a free agent at the end of the season.

If the team had decided to pick up his option, it still could have cut him following the year to save roughly $9.7 million the following season. His contract, however, would have become guaranteed if he got injured this season.

For more on Ponder and the 5th-year option process, read Andrew Krammer's post from Friday.
