Reports: Vikings hire former Idaho head coach to lead defensive line

The Vikings are still adding to their defensive coaching staff.

The latest reported addition is Robb Akey, who will join the Vikings as defensive line coach, according to Ben Goessling of

Akey is the former head coach of Idaho, out of the Western Athletic Conference. He was 20-50 as head coach of the Vandals and was fired in October of 2012.

Akey played college football at Weber State from 1984-87, while Mike Zimmer was coaching there. Zimmer was an inside linebackers coach at Weber State from 1981-84, and then moved to defensive backs coach until 1988.

After his playing days, Akey has coached at various stops, including as a position coach at his alma mater, Northern Arizona, Washington State and most recently, as the head coach at Idaho.

He has collegiate coaching experience as a defensive line coach, special teams coach, defensive coordinator and as a head coach.
