Cam Barker's days appear numbered with the Minnesota Wild.

The 25-year-old defenseman was placed on waivers on Tuesday morning, according to multiple reports, and if he clears, the Wild likely will buy out the final year of his contract.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, Barker has two goals, 10 assists and 44 penalty minutes in 71 games since the Wild acquired him from the Chicago Blackhawks for defensemen Kim Johnsson and Nick Leddy in February 2010.

If they act by Thursday, the Star Tribune reported, the Wild can buy out Barker for one-third of his $3.25 million salary and significantly reduce the resulting cap hit.

Free agency begins on Friday.
