New Gophers hoops assistant spent time in federal prison 14 years ago

The Gophers basketball team has officially announced the additions of two assistant coaches to Richard Pitino's new staff -- Mike Balado and Kimani Young, both of whom worked under Pitino at Florida International University.

"I am excited about the additions of coach Balado and coach Young to our staff at the University of Minnesota," said Pitino in a statement. "Both of these guys played a huge part in our turnaround at Florida International. They are well respected within the coaching community as terrific recruiters and leaders of student-athletes."

Young reached the 1,000-point plateau as a star at UTEP under Don Haskins from 1993-1997 and spent six years as athletic director at the New Heights basketball program in New York City. Young also worked as a video coordinator at St. John's in 2008-2009. Along with being an assistant coach, Young has a reputation of being plugged in on the recruiting trail.

Young also has some skeletons in his closet.

According to reports, Young was arrested in 1999 for possession of 96 pounds of marijuana and was sentenced to one year in federal prison.

'U' athletic director Norwood Teague, in an effort to get out in front of the story, released this statement to the Star Tribune:

"Kimani Young is an outstanding addition to the University of Minnesota and its men's basketball program. President Eric Kaler and I each spoke at length with College Presidents and Athletic Directors at schools employing Coach Young and received assurances that Kimani was a positive influence and leader for their programs and student-athletes. Coach Young's mistake, more than 14 years ago, was an aberration in an otherwise positive and stable life. He has been an upstanding leader in every university community he has worked and lived since that time."
