Joe Coleman may have played his final game for the Gophers men's basketball team.
"Joe has asked for his release," a source close to Coleman told 1500 ESPN's Darren "Doogie" Wolfson on Tuesday night.
A second source close to Coleman, 19, confirmed the 2011 Minnesota Mr. Basketball wants to be released from his scholarship, though there's still a chance he changes his mind.
The plan is for the guard, who has two years of eligibility remaining, to meet with new coach Richard Pitino on Wednesday morning, sources said.
A "U" source said Coleman's transfer wouldn't be a surprise, given the way Pitino's arrival after replacing Tubby Smith has raised the stakes for program.
A Minneapolis native and Hopkins High School product, Coleman averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds last season in 34 games (32 starts).
