•Two key additions to the Minnesota Vikings defense will not play in the team's preseason opener on Friday against the Houston Texans.

Linebacker Desmond Bishop (groin) and rookie cornerback Xavier Rhodes (hamstring) will not play, according to coach Leslie Frazier.

"It's unlikely," Frazier said. "I'm not expecting that [Bishop] is going to play."

"Xavier [Rhodes], probably the same thing. But I don't think we put him out there until we get a few days of practice under his belt. I don't know if that would be wise."

•Defensive end Jared Allen (ankle) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, but Frazier said he'll continue with his original plan and not play him Friday, especially with the recent injury.

•Safety Harrison Smith (knee) practiced and could be suited up for Friday's game.

"Both are going to be fine," Frazier said about Allen and Smith. "There were no ill effects from what happened [Tuesday]."

•Cornerback A.J. Jefferson (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely not play Friday.

•Center John Sullivan, who had microfracture surgery on his knee in the offseason, has taken every rep with the first-team offense in training camp and has had no setbacks.

Frazier spoke highly of Sullivan's development as leader of the offensive line from last season and carrying on into this year.

"His leadership, he really improved in that area," Frazier said. "We're trying to develop that on our offensive line, with a young left tackle, a new guard at the time, a new right guard at the time, we needed between he and Phil [Loadholt] to step up. And Sully did, and Phil."

•Cornerback Marcus Sherels continued his solid stretch of play dating back to Saturday's scrimmage, when he intercepted quarterback Christian Ponder. Sherels deflected a Matt Cassel pass to receiver Chris Summers in team drills.

•Rookie linebacker Michael Mauti made a stop at the line of scrimmage in team drills, standing up running back Toby Gerhart before he could reach the line.

•Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw a nice back-shoulder fade to receiver Joe Webb over cornerback Bobby Felder. Felder returned the favor the next play and deflected a Bethel-Thompson pass to receiver Stephen Burton.

•Burton has had many ups in this training camp, but had a down day on Wednesday, dropping multiple passes.

Frazier: "He's been so up and down, we've always been searching for consistency with Stephen. We've been excited at times in the past and then something would happen and you go 'where did that come from?' We know he has some raw talent, he has improved. But this preseason is going to be big for him to showcase what he's capable of doing throughout the preseason on a consistent basis."
