The Minnesota Twins opened the first-year player draft's second day this morning by selecting switch-hitting Georgia prep shortstop Cartier "Niko" Goodrum at No. 71 overall.

Long and lean at 6-foot-3 and 167 pounds, Goodrum played at Fayette County High School and is seen by many as a future outfielder, according to scouting reports.

Per ESPN.com:

Goodrum is athletic with some fast-twitch capability, but remains pretty raw as a baseball player and is more of an upside play than a probability one.

At the plate, he takes a huge stride forward but maintains his balance pretty well and opens his hips just as he starts his swing to generate more bat speed. He hasn't faced great pitching and his ability to make contact in pro ball is a major question on his bat.

Between his body and instincts at shortstop, he's likely headed for the outfield, but as an above-average runner with some arm strength he should be fine in center.

We'll check in periodically throughout the rest of the draft, but for faster updates, you can follow the picks via MLB.com's live draft tracker.
