Nick Punto won't play this weekend after all.

Hours after manager Ron Gardenhire told 1500 ESPN he was hopeful Punto would return this weekend at Kansas City, the Minnesota Twins placed their third baseman on the 15-day disabled list.

The move is retroactive to April 16 -- the day Punto complained of a sore groin. The injury now is being called a right hip-flexor strain.

The Twins replaced him on the roster by recalling infielder Luke Hughes from Class-AAA Rochester, where Hughes was hitting .267 with eight doubles and five RBIs. He's expected to be in uniform on Saturday and will wear No. 38.
